Sometimes when I don&#8217;t know what to draw, I just start with drawing parallel lines as straight as I can.  It&#8217;s being stuck doing a free write and scrawling out &#8220;I don&#8217;t know what to write&#8221; until something comes.<\/p>\n<p>I think that the collages I&#8217;ve been doing lately have actually caused a certain amount of tension for me, as they seem more polished and striking than things I&#8217;ve done in the past&#8211;so now I want everything I make to be that exciting, which in turn leads me to be impatient with myself.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/lauraelaine\/1151999201\/\" title=\"Photo Sharing\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm2.static.flickr.com\/1017\/1151999201_df3486c173_m.jpg\" width=\"183\" height=\"240\" alt=\"The Man with a Lot to Say\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/lauraelaine\/1151998125\/\" title=\"Photo Sharing\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm2.static.flickr.com\/1419\/1151998125_7f1eafbad9_m.jpg\" width=\"174\" height=\"240\" alt=\"People in Berkeley Caf\u00c3\u00a9s, I\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8212;<\/p>\n<p>I spent some time last week trying to track down more information related to a brief mention, in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hamillgallery.com\/KUBA\/KubaTextiles.html\">blurb<\/a> for a 1999 exhibit on Kuba cloth, that Gustav Klimt collected African textiles.  I couldn&#8217;t find a thing, not even in the journal databases accessible through the university.  The man&#8217;s jacket in <em>The Kiss<\/em> looks so much to me like strip-woven cloth, such as Kente, from Western Africa, and I wonder whether he had seen any.  <\/p>\n<p><a href='https:\/\/laurashefler.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/09\/klimtkiss.jpg' title='kiss 2'><img src='https:\/\/laurashefler.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/09\/klimtkiss.jpg' alt='kiss 2' \/><\/a> <a href='https:\/\/laurashefler.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/09\/45133511_d4297e3b80_m.jpg' title='kente 60'><img src='https:\/\/laurashefler.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/09\/45133511_d4297e3b80_m.jpg' alt='kente 60' \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I did find a few notes that his companion, Emily Fl\u00c3\u00b6ge, who with her sister ran a major fashion house, collected folk textiles (e.g., from Bohemia and Northern Hungary).
